Hospital for Sick Children
Gastroenterology and Cell Biology
Dr. Aleixo Muise, a Clinician Scientist in the SickKids Research Institute and Canada Research Chair in Pediatric Inflammatory Bowel Disease, has devoted his clinical and research career to uncovering the causes and developing novel therapies for gastrointestinal diseases. Using state-of-the-art techniques to characterize molecular defects, including next-generation sequencing, cellular and animal models and human organoids, his group has identified TTC7A, PLVAP, ARPC1B, SYK, and other gene variants as the cause for intestinal diseases. Dr. Muiseā€™s ground-breaking and innovative research program has challenged existing paradigms concerning the pathogenesis and treatment of IBD. He showed that 3-5% of pediatric IBD patients who were previously thought to have complex polygenic disease actually have monogenic causes, allowing for precision medicine therapies especially curative bone marrow transplant and targeted therapies. Finally, he is utilizing high-throughput screening of FDA-approved drugs to identify, validate and repurpose medicines in the management of previously untreatable, often fatal pediatric disease. Dr. Muise has co-founded a number of international consortia that enhanced the identification and enabled the unrestricted diagnosis of monogenic intestinal diseases of underprivileged children all over the world. Overall, Dr. Muise has developed and sustained an innovative translational research program that continues to significantly improve the lives of children.
