SE-053 - Mini Gastric Bypass Surgery for Morbid Obesity: Radiological postoperative complications

Abstract

Purpose

Evaluate the specific postoperative radiological complications of mini gastric bypass (MGB) on abdominal CT scans and their association with patients’ symptoms and signs.

Material and methods

A single center retrospective study conducted between the years 2014-2019. Demographics, operative and postoperative data were collected from medical records. Post-surgical abdominal CT scans were evaluated for complications.

Results

The cohort consisted of 478 patients who underwent MGB, of which- 89 patients underwent postoperative abdominal CT scan with a total of 120 cases. The total CT yield for radiological complications was 56%. There was no significant difference in CT yield between the early (<30 days) and late (>30 days) postoperative period (50% vs 66%, p=0.09).Six radiological complications were identified- the most prevalent were collection/abscess (50%) followed by hematoma (16%). Using multivariate model, the significant predictors for radiological complications were tachycardia (OR=13.6), shivers (OR=24.3), female gender (OR=4.1) and age (OR=1.04), [p<0.01]. Marginal ulcers (4.2%) and chronic fistulas (8.3%) are important complications that were not visualized under CT.

Conclusion

MGB has become a popular alternative procedure for bariatric surgery. Radiologists need to know the normal postsurgical anatomy of MGB but also what complications to encounter.
