Internal Medicine Unit
Prof. Paolo Ventura obtained his medical degree from the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia in 1990, where he worked as a researcher and medical doctor before specialising in Internal Medicine in 1995. In 1998, Prof. Ventura became Assistant Professor of Geriatrics at the Geriatrics Unit, School of Medicine, University of Modena and Reggio Emilia, Estense Hospital of Modena. Since 2001, Prof. Ventura has been working as Associate Professor of Internal Medicine and Emergency Medicine and as a medical doctor at the Internal Medicine Unit of Policlinico University Hospital of Modena. Here, he is responsible for clinics in chronic liver diseases, liver transplantation, hepatocellular carcinoma and rare diseases, and at the Regional Centre for the Diagnosis and Management of Porphyrias. He has also been involved in both teaching and research during this time. In 2007, Prof. Ventura obtained an MBA (Level II) in Evidence Based Medicine and Methodology of Clinical Research at the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia and, in 2012, he obtained a Higher Certificate in Advanced Applied Statistics for Clinical Research at the same university. Prof. Ventura has been a member of the board for the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia since 2003. He was a member of the Ethics Committee at the university between 2009 and 2012 and secretary of the M.D. Degree Programme between 2009 and 2013. Prof. Ventura is currently Chair of the founding committee and co-ordinator of the Italian Porphyria Group (GrIP), a member of the Academic Senate of the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia, and Vice-Director of the M.D. Degree Programme at the university. In 2019, Prof. Ventura was President of the International Congress of Porphyrins and Porphyrias (ICPP).

Session Description

This symposium sponsored and funded by Alnylam Pharmaceuticals will be chaired by Prof. Paolo Ventura with an interactive patient case study session led by Dr Delia D’avola. Our expert faculty will focus on best practice for the diagnosis and management of acute hepatic porphyria (AHP), including a presentation on the latest clinical data readouts for long-term treatment of AHP. The audience will have opportunities to engage with the experts throughout the session and ask questions during the interactive panel discussion.
