Philip W. Shaul, M.D., Professor of Pediatrics and Vice Chair for Research in the Department of Pediatrics at UT Southwestern, is a physician-scientist whose laboratory is focused on endothelial cell biology in the context of cardiovascular and metabolic health and disease. Disorders investigated include atherosclerosis, thrombosis and type 2 diabetes. His research has received support from the NIH, the Department of Defense, the American Heart Association and numerous other organizations. Dr. Shaul is the Training Director of the NIH/NICHD-sponsored Child Health Research Career Development Award (K12) in the Department of Pediatrics at UT Southwestern, Co-Program Director of the NIH T32 Training Program in Lung Biology and Disease, and the Director of the Physician-scientist Training Program in Pediatrics. Dr. Shaul also directs Southwestern Medical School’s Scholarly Activity Program, in which all medical students spend a minimum of 12 weeks engaged in basic or clinical research or related activities. He is the holder of the Associates First Capital Corporation Distinguished Chair in Pediatrics, the Director of the Center for Pulmonary and Vascular Biology in the Department of Pediatrics, and a member of the Genetics, Development and Disease Graduate Program. Dr. Shaul was President of the Society for Pediatric Research in 2005-2006.
