Abstract

Abstract Body

The average life expectancy of pediatrician is the highest among physicians with 77 years. There is a period of about 17 years to think for continuation of work. The average actual UK retirement age is 59.6 years. Due to shift of mandatory retirement age from 65 to 67, in some countries to 70, many of pediatricians are capable of continuing their profession. Major concern of medical authorities is the performance ability of older physicians. Tests are recommended for wellness, cognitive function and competence between 65-70 and beyond. Delayed retirement reasons are financial obligations, strong work identity, career satisfaction, and institutional flexibility. Support for continuing to practice include: flexible work hours, minimal work barriers, enhancing work satisfaction, prioritizing physician health, and attention to finances. Reduction of working hours may present the most successful instruments for staff. A shift toward non-clinical duties such as teaching and mentorship can help with retention. An important component of successful retirement planning concerns creations of meaningful activities after retirement. Healthcare organizations should consider promoting retirement resource toolkits, education sessions, guidance around financial planning for physicians throughout their careers and creating post-retirement opportunities that maintain institutional ties through teaching, mentoring, and peer support. Many national and international organization welcome retired physicians for part time work abroad to help in disasters and in third world countries like “Medecins sans Frontières, “Ärzte der Welt”, Humedica. Every pediatrician knows, when to retire. The main recommendation, if continuation is desired, would be: start planning early – at least 5-7 years ahead.
