Immunology
Dr. López-Hoyos has extensive experience in mechanisms of immunological tolerance, based on his initial studies during PhD programme of the role of lymphocyte apoptosis mechanisms in immune tolerance and the development of autoimmune phenomena in murine models. Starting in 1997, he joined the Immunology faculty at the University Hospital Marques de Valdecilla where he started to transfer knowledge from animal models to human pathology, both in autoimmune diseases and in solid organ transplantation. From 2001 he has obtained continued funding from compettitve national programmes to investigate in murine models of autoimmune disease. At the time, the work focused on the study of autoimmune pathology human, especially mediated by autoantibodies. From 2006 his team started studies on the immune response in solid organ transplants, focused especially on the search for immune tolerance biomarkers. Particularly relevant have been the works related to the regulatory T cells and the role of the mediated humoral response in the evolution of renal transplantation. Dr. López-Hoyos is member of REDINREN (Spanish Network in Kidney Diseases from Carlos III National Rsearch Institute) and has been co-leader of one of the work packages focused in kidney transplant. He is currently a member of the RICORS team in kidney diseases the Santander node. In the last two years, research work has been directed largely to health issues related to the COVID-19 pandemic investigating in the immune response and the finding of immune correlates of protection. All this experience is summarized in the following numbers (in addition to previous data): Competitive national research projects (23 as PI and 15 as collaborator); 17 PhD supervised.works More than 25 book chapters; Active participation in national and international conferences; Member of Scientific and Organizing Committees of National and International Congressses. POSITIONS • Head of the Immunology Dpt. at Hospital Universitario Marques de Valdecilla (Santander, Spain): 2012-Present. • Associate Professor, Department of Molecular Biology, Universtiy of Cantabria, Santander, Spain: 2020- Present. • Scientific Director of Research Institute Valdecilla (IDIVAL): 2020-Present. • President of The Spanish Society of Immunology from 2020.
