Deval Karia (https://www.linkedin.com/in/devalkaria07/) is an entrepreneur-in-residence at CPDMeD, Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore. He is a graduate of the Master of Design (M. Des.) program at CPDM, where he was awarded the Institute Gold Medal for the best M. Des. student, conferred by Mr. Aziz Premji. He is also a recipient of the Gandhian Young Technological Innovator (GYTI) award, conferred by the honorable Vice President of India, Shri Venkaiah Naidu, for his work on the development of an affordable insulin pump. This work was his Master’s Thesis project and is now supported by the BIG grant from C-CAMP, BIRAC. Deval is contributing towards the development of a portable organ transport container (LifeBox) and the design of a rehabilitation system for children with hearing impairment (Dhwani). He has been awarded the James Dyson Design Award and the Lexus Design Award India. His current research interests are translational in nature and focused on the design of medical devices for resource-constrained settings, and the use of open-source communities as a channel for their accelerated development and commercialization.
