Birgit Rami-Merhar is an associate Professor of Pediatrics at the Medical University of Vienna, Austria. She leads the team for pediatric diabetology. She has been working in the field of pediatric diabetology for 25 years now, working closely and actively with national and international associations, such as ISPAD, SWEET, DPV, ENDO-ERN. Her research focus is within epidemiology, diabetes technology, long term prognosis of type 1 diabetes mellitus, complications, psychosocial factors, rare forms of diabetes mellitus, congenital hyperinsulinism, ß-cell-functions, Vascular complications in diabetes, insulins, hypoglycemia in T1D patients. Recent projects: KidsAP, INNODIA, INNODIA-MELD-ATG, DPV-Registry, SWEET Project, EURODIAB Her aim is to provide and improve care and quality of life for children and adolescents with diabetes mellitus. This also involves cooperations with diabetes lay organizations e.g. diabetes camps, diabetes education or family weekends. She has also been an author of national and international diabetes guidelines. A special interest covers the area of diabetes technology and the progress in the development and research in the pediatric field, especially in very young children.
