• Trained at Guy's Hospital London with Prof Harry Keen and started research in diabetes at Yale, with Professors Robert Sherwin and Bill Tamborlane • Major research focus has been on investigating the pathogenesis of hypoglycaemia in diabetes treatments and methods of reducing the risk • Co-developed the UK's lead type 1 adult education programme DAFNE, and led on the development of islet transplantation as a treatment for hypoglycaemia in the UK • Used neuroimaging to understand the brain's responses to hypoglycaemia in health and disease and is now leading a major trial of a cognitive intervention for people with treatment-resistant hypoglycaemia in type 1 diabetes.
