KELLY L. CLOSE, PRESIDENT Kelly Close founded Close Concerns in 2002; its mission is to make everyone smarter about diabetes. There, Kelly and her team write approximately three million words each year for Closer Look, a highly-praised news service covering the field. Kelly's passion for the field comes from her extensive experiences in the field and nearly 35 years with diabetes. Kelly is the co-author of over 40 peer-reviewed manuscripts. She also wrote the forward for the 2017 “Bright Spots and Landmines” by Adam Brown, that has been downloaded by over 250,000 PWD. Kelly is an associate editor of Clinical Diabetes, a journal focused on diabetes for PCPs published by the ADA. Kelly also chairs The diaTribe Foundation, a nonprofit established in 2013 to improve the lives of PWD and to advocate for action. She is the co-founder of diaTribe.org, begun in 2006 as an educational resource for PWD; diaTribe.org’s free educational mailers go to nearly 275,000 people every week. Over 300 mailers have been created and over three million people visited diaTribe.org last year. Before starting Close Concerns and The diaTribe Foundation, Kelly’s work was based on finance (investment banking at Goldman Sachs, equity research at Merrill Lynch) and at McKinsey & Company. Kelly graduated from Amherst College and Harvard Business School. Kelly and her husband, the co-founder of Close Concerns, diaTribe, and dQ&A, are co-hosts of the popular online discussion series CPS Lectures.

Harnessing the power of social media and peer support

Abstract

Abstract Body

Social media has become a powerful resource where people with diabetes can access peer support, information, anecdotes, and blogs written by the community for the community. The stigma associated with diabetes remains a considerable burden for many, and digital safe spaces must be available where people with diabetes can express themselves and share experiences, gain support and advice, and offer support to each other. In this talk, I will present information about the power of social media, stories of peer to peer empowerment, and resources to help people with diabetes connect safely online.
