J. Hans DeVries obtained board licenses in Internal Medicine and Endocrinology at the VU University Medical Centre, Amsterdam, the Netherlands. His PhD thesis (2003) was entitled ‘Subcutaneous and Intraperitoneal Insulin Delivery in Type 1 Diabetes’. He became lecturer and consultant in Internal Medicine and Endocrinology at the Academic Medical Center at the University of Amsterdam, where he was appointed Principal Investigator in 2010 and Professor of Diabetes Medicine in 2016. In 2017, he accepted a position as medical director at Profil in Neuss, Germany, keeping his professorship in Amsterdam for one day per week. He was awarded the Diabetes Technology Society’s Artificial Pancreas Research Award in 2012 and a Fellowship of the Royal College of Physicians (Edinburgh) in 2013. He published more than 200 papers in the field of clinical diabetes. He is a frequently invited speaker at international diabetes meetings, International Associate Editor of Diabetes Technology & Therapeutics and an editorial board member of Diabetes Care. His main research interests are insulin and glp-1 based therapies, continuous glucose monitoring, the artificial pancreas, glucose variability, pregnancy in diabetes and glycaemia in hospitalized patients.

One hundred years after the first commercialization of insulin, once-weekly insulins represent the latest development in this field. Advanced prolongation mechanisms have been employed to enable once-weekly dosing. This presentation will highlight the pharmacokinetic, pharmacodynamic and clinical data of once-weekly insulins disclosed so far.
