Dr. Yun-Ru (Ruby) Chen, Professor in Genomics Research Center, Academia Sinica, Taiwan, focuses on protein misfolding problems and neurodegenerative diseases. She obtained her Bachelor degree from National Taiwan University in 1996, and her PhD. in Department of Molecular and Structural Biochemistry, North Carolina State University in 2003. She did the postdoctoral training in Dept. of Molecular Biology & Biochemistry, University of California, Irvine, USA. Since 2007, her laboratory in Academia Sinica has been working on amyloids focusing on amyloid-β (Aβ) and tau in Alzheimer’s disease (AD), TDP-43 and dipeptide repeats (DPRs) in frontal temporal dementia (FTD) and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Her group examined the aggregation mechanism of amyloids and found the stability of Aβ predominantly determines the nucleation process. They discovered and identified toxic full-length TDP-43 oligomers and generated conformational antibody for misfolded TDP-43 oligomers (2014 Nature Communications). Recently, they examined the role of TDP-43 in AD and found TDP-43 inhibits Aβ fibrillization by interaction and retention of Aβ oligomers (2020 Nature Communications). She also develops antibodies and small compounds to facilitate translational medicine research in neurodegenerative diseases.
