CNC - Center for Neuroscience and Cell Biology, University of Coimbra MitoXT - Mitochondrial Toxicology and Experimental Therapeutics
Ana I. Duarte is currently a PhD Researcher at the Mitochondrial Toxicology and Experimental Therapeutics Group (CNC - Center for Neuroscience & Cell Biology, University of Coimbra, Portugal), headed by Doctor PJ Oliveira. She concluded her PhD in Biology (Cell Biology) in 2007, at the University of Coimbra (Coimbra, Portugal). Until 2010, she studied the neuroprotective role of peripherally-administered insulin or IGF-1 in Huntington’s disease, at the labs of Professors AC Rego (CNC), P Brundin, M Björkqvist, D Nicholls and J-Y Li (Lund Medical School, Lund, Sweden). From 2010-2019, she established two research lines on the impact of type 2 diabetes in brain function across the reproductive aging, and on the neuroprotection by anti-type 2 diabetic drugs against brain dysfunction in chronic type 2 diabetes, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s and Huntington’s diseases. These studies were done at Professors PI Moreira (CNC), M Björkqvist and C Patrone labs (Lund Medical School and Karolinska Institute, Sweden). In 2019, she became a PhD Researcher at the CNC’s Metabolism, Mitochondria and Hormones in Brain Disorders Lab (headed by Professor PI Moreira), whereby she leveraged those research lines to the analysis of the neuroprotection by novel cardiovascular risk-reducing drugs against brain deficits upon high cardiovascular risk conditions. AI Duarte’s expertise and novel ideas turned her an expert of the Fondation Médéric Alzheimer Focus Group (France) on novel therapies against Alzheimer’s disease, as well as in the organization of international symposia in relevant scientific meetings, in the evaluation of international project proposals and fellowship applications. Her fruitful collaborations with (inter)national renowned experts also rendered her a significant amount of (inter)national funding and prizes, either as PI, Co-PI or team member. She published 3 book chapters, 52 papers, >65 proceedings, >65 communications, >130 posters, displaying a RCR of 76.74, a cumulative impact factor of 182.7, Hi=25 and >1850 citations (Scopus). She is (Guest) Editor of 6 journals, reviewer of 2 chapters and for >70 journals (top 1% reviewer by Publons since 2017), opponent of 21 Theses/Projects’ defences and abstracts. She supervise(d)/tutored several Post-Doc, PhD, MSc and BSc students, and MSc Fellows (plus volunteer researchers and lab rotation students). AI Duarte is often involved in Science dissemination and communication to different target audiences, and works voluntarily with individuals diagnosed with neurodegenerative diseases.
