S. Schaefer-Somi

I, Sabine Schäfer-Somi was born the 21st of May 1966 in Germany (Essen; G). I came to Austria in 1978 and became an Austrian citizen in 1984. The same year I started my studies in veterinary medicine and graduated in 1991. In 1993, after intense scientific work concerning the viability of newborn calves in relation to pregnancy and parturition, I finished my DVM. Since 1994 I am working at the Clinic for Obstetrics, Gynecology and Andrology, University of Veterinary Medicine Vienna as a university assistant. Even though trained in all fields of animal reproduction, I always favoured small animal reproduction, which became my special field of interest. In 2002, I became Diplomate of the European College of Animal Reproduction (Dipl. ECAR). In 2004 I became Assistency Professor and one year later received a grant to continue my studies concerning the immunology of the pregnant bitch and her neonates. In 2006, I habilitated with the same scientific theme (A.Prof). At present I am working as a university lecturer and scientist at the Centre for Artificial Insemination and Embryo Transfer, University of Veterinary Medicine Vienna. I am mainly responsible for the area “Biotechnology and Reproduction in Small Animals”. Special fields of interest are spermatology, cryopreservation of gametes, artificial insemination, immunology of pregnancy and the neonates, neonatology, contraception. Basic principles: Team work, life long learning and international cooperations are essential. Always open for a good discussion.
