Session Description:
In the next decades, the age distribution in Europe will become inverted, with more people older than 65 years than children1. Life expectancy also continues to increase with the median in much of Europe above 80 years of age compared to 70 years in 19502. Unfortunately, with age, comes a weakening of resistance to many infectious diseases. This phenomenon - called immunosenescence - is a complex multi-factorial process, and is reflected in an increased risk of infectious diseases, which can be seen at a population level from around the age of 502. During this symposium Prof Pawelec and Prof Schelling will review the mechanisms underlying immunosenescence, as well as the impact of infectious diseases on healthy ageing.
