Abstract

Objectives

Borderline Personality Disorder designate a personality disorder with impulsivity issues regarding relationships, risky behavior, and emotional regulation. This personality disorder issue is hard to treat and often related to poor treatment outcomes. Nonetheless, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy stands as a tremendous therapeutical approach we can adapt to a shorter version. We tested 6-month CBT protocol-3 modules, respectively, working on emotion regulation, distress tolerance, and relationships- in a French context to compare its effectiveness to treatment as Usual (TAU).

Methods

We recruited 56 patients suffering from BPD, 34 receiving the adapted form of DBT, and 22 receiving TAU. For a 1 year follow up, we recruited 28 participants. We assessed BPD traits, impulsivity, aggressiveness, Suicidal risk, and Hopelessness.

Results

Our results revealed the effectiveness of this six-month DBT adaptation to decrease BPD traits and most of the clinical dimensions and a persistence of its effect even after 1 year follow up (COVID crisis).

Conclusions

Shortened treatment protocols tend to prove their efficiency for symptom reduction in BPD. Further research is needed to replicate these results.
