Session Description:
This session will begin with Professor Guy Goodwin exploring the history of psychedelics, examining how academic research in the 20th Century heralded the promise of an exciting new therapy for many mental health conditions, before political and moral panic led to a shutdown of research. It will look at how, after a hiatus of several decades, psychedelics are now enjoying a renaissance with new studies once again showing the promise of psychedelic therapy and its potential use in psychiatry. Dr Metten Somers will give a first-hand account of setting up and running a psilocybin therapy trial for treatment-resistant depression, as part of a large-scale phase IIb clinical study that completed recruitment during the COVID-19 pandemic.
