Session Description
Unfortunately, over the decades psychiatry as a branch of medicine has been frequently stigmatized and relegated to a field that -for the majority of the general public or the population-, could be considered as obscure, poor understood and sometimes "dangerous". This perhaps as a consequence of the traditional focus of psychiatry on the aspect of caring for the mentally ill and on its most widespread stereotype in Western culture: "madness". However, as with medicine as a whole, there is a growing focus in mental health today on prevention and health promotion. Positive psychiatry seeks a state of well-being in which people recognize their capabilities, are able to cope with normal life stressors and stress, work productively and fruitfully, and make a contribution to their communities and societies. Mental health is about improving people's competencies and enabling them to achieve their self-determined goals. Therefore, through positive psychiatry, a paradigm shift could be generated on the aphorism of Claude Bernard that laid the foundations of modern medicine: "there are no diseases but people with diseases", to a broader vision taking into account that " there are no people with diseases, but individuals who seek well-being ". Therefore, this symposium will focus on promoting positive psychiatry as a fundamental vision for the care of people today, explaining its foundations and the tools that can be useful, mainly in the attention of patients with depression, anxiety, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and addictions.
