Session Description
Persons affected by severe and persistent mental disorders (e.g., schizophrenia, mood disorders) exhibit significant illness-related morbidity often due to disturbances in motivation, depression, cognition and negative symptoms. Despite advances that have been made in psychopharmacology of these foregoing disorders most affected individuals do not have sufficient outcome due to inadequate response of the most disabling symptoms. A separate body of evidence indicates that D3 selective targeting may result in improvement in reward and cognitive-related symptoms which often appear clinically as amotivation, depression and negative symptoms. Herein, we review the rationale for targeting D3 and discuss potential therapeutic avenues for targeting D3 in a clinical setting.
