Abstract
Abstract Body
Neuromuscular disorders span a wide range of inflammatory, genetic and metabolic disease. Although most of them individually are rare, the sheer number of conditions means that neuromuscular issues are seen quite frequently in all intensive care units (ICUs). Clinically, they can be categorised into disorders where the initial presentation can require treatment in the ICU; chronic conditions where ICU treatment is needed to manage complications and acute exacerbations; and conditions that arise in the ICU. Prompt diagnosis and appropriate management can achieve excellent clinical outcomes in all of these, but often, procedures unfamiliar to Intensive Care are required for diagnosis, and neuromuscular expertise is concentrated in specialist units distant from the ICU. This lecture presents typical neuromuscular problems encountered in intensive care, their diagnostic workup, and management pathways, based on typical case studies.
