NF1 plexiform neurofibromas: importance of the MDT in managing patients through diagnosis, treatment and safety - Symposium Supported by Alexion, AstraZeneca Rare Disease Description: Plexiform neurofibromas (PNs) present in 30-50% of patients with neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1)1. PNs typically manifest early in life, developing rapidly in early childhood and have the potential to cause significant pain, disability, and disfigurement, depending on their location and size2.Historically, the only treatment for PNs was surgery, but some are difficult to fully resect due to tissue infiltration and hypervascularisation3. More recently MEK inhibitors (MEKi) have been investigated as a therapeutic option for the treatment of inoperable and symptomatic NF1-PNs4.This symposium will discuss (1) the disease burden of NF1-PN, clinical trial data, evaluating MEKi for the treatment of symptomatic, inoperable NF1-PN in children and adolescents and (2) patient case studies and Q&A, showing use of MEKi in clinical practice and the importance of the multidisciplinary team (MDT) approach in managing patients and adverse events with a panel of highly experienced and distinguished MDT physicians.
