Best Practices in MS Nursing: Advanced Practice

Using didactic lecture and audience based engagement, this program will assist nurses, and other healthcare professionals in defining and understanding the types and roles of an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) specifically as it pertains to providing care to patients who are living with Multiple Sclerosis (MS). We begin by providing a definition and description of Advanced Practice Registered Nurses (APRNs), recognizing the different types of APRNs and identifying the various practice settings in which APRNs practice. We will discuss the roles of the APRN specifically as it pertains to optimizing patient care and review a collaborative approach to providing MS patient care. Lastly, limitations and challenges faced by APRNs in MS care will be discussed and propose methods for addressing these reviewed.
At the completion of this session, the attendee will be able to:
1. Define the Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN).
2. Recognize different types of APRNs and identify their various practice settings.
3. Describe the roles of the APRN in optimizing patient care and treatment in MS.
4. Discuss collaborative approach in MS patient care.
5. Describe limitations/challenges for the APRNs in MS Care and proposed methods for addressing.
