M. Calabrese

Massimiliano Calabrese is Professor of Neurology at Department of Neurosciences, Biomedicine and Movement at the University of Verona. He leads the Multiple Sclerosis Center of University of Verona and the International Centre for Advanced Research in Multiple Sclerosis (ICARE-MS). Following medical degree and training in neurology, he completed a clinical fellowship at the Neuroimmunology Branch of National Institute of Health in Bethesda. He has special expertise in advanced MRI acquisition and analysis particularly as they relate to understanding the pathogenesis and the evolution of Multiple Sclerosis. Since 2005 his clinical research activity has been focused on neurodegeneration and neuroprotection in Multiple Sclerosis, with the ultimate aim of predicting and of slowing down the accumulation and progression of irreversible disability. As a lead clinician in the MS service at Multiple Sclerosis Center of University Hospital of Verona, he has a strong commitment to patient care. Prof. Calabrese and his team follow more than 2.000 MS patients. He has contributed to the development of important pathways for new MS medications and developed international and local MRI protocols for diagnosing MS and monitoring patients on disease-modifying drugs. He runs specialist MS and diagnostic clinics with multidisciplinary input from therapists and MS specialist nurses. Over the last 15 years, Prof. Calabrese conducted more than 30 international Phase 2 and Phase 3 clinical trials in 12 of which he was the Principal Investigator He is currently the PI of 6 international Phase 2 and 3 Clinical Trials.
