    Session Description
Respiratory tract infection susceptibility differs between individuals and is impacted by the resident airway microbiota. In this meet-the-expert session we explore the infant airway microbiota development over time and in relation to infection susceptibility. In addition, we discuss the impact of the airway microbiota on pneumococcal colonization patterns. Appropriate study design and study execution are essential to (respiratory) microbiota studies. Therefore, we will interactively discuss important considerations when designing/executing studies that include the characterization of the respiratory microbiota. Please note: All MTE sessions are designed to encourage active learning and to concentrate on close interaction between audience and speakers. The MTE session organisers have provided at least 15 minutes for active discussions in their agenda.

The symposia will focus on the continued importance of animal models as a tool to study the molecular basis of pneumococcal pathogenesis. Topics of discussion will include the validity of the mouse model, how it can be leveraged to identiy anatomical site specific roles for virulence determinants, and how powerful new sequencing technologies can be used to identif the in vivo transcrtome of S. pneumonia. Please note: All MTE sessions are designed to encourage active learning and to concentrate on close interaction between audience and speakers. The MTE session organisers have provided at least 15 minutes for active discussions in their agenda.

    Session Description
Understanding what causes pneumonia is important for knowing the best treatment and prevention measures, but etiology studies suffer because of the difficulty in obtaining specimens from the site of infection – inside the lung. In this session, we will present findings and case studies on the etiology of pneumonia deaths from Child Health and Mortality Prevention Surveillance (CHAMPS), an ongoing program enrolling stillbirths and deaths in children
