Karena is in the final year of a doctoral degree in epidemiology at McGill University in Montreal, Canada. She started conducting health-related research in 2012 at the Canadian Blood Services. While conducting research at the Canadian Blood Services, the interesting and challenging field of epidemiology caught her attention. She wanted to research a topic that could have an impact on policies around cancer prevention and control. This drew her to Dr. Eduardo Franco’s lab, where she researches how infections such as Epstein-Barr virus, hepatitis B and C viruses, Helicobacter pylori and human papillomavirus contribute to the cancer burden in Canada and the United States. Prior to joining the Division of Cancer Epidemiology at McGill University, Karena obtained a Master of Arts in Public Administration (2014) and a Master of Science in Health: Science, Technology and Policy (2015).
