Dr. Al Getgood is an Associate Professor at the University of Western Ontario and orthopaedic surgeon and clinician scientist specialising in complex knee reconstruction at the Fowler Kennedy Sport Medicine Clinic; London; Ontario. He completed his primary medical degree at the University of Edinburgh followed by orthopaedic residency and a research Doctorate (MD) at the University of Cambridge. His fellowship training included time in London (Ontario); Banff (Alberta) and Coventry (UK). Dr. Getgood’s clinical practice focuses on complex soft tissue reconstruction of the knee. He has been successful in securing over 9 million dollars in peer reviewed and industry funded grants to build his pre-clinical and clinical research program focusing on complex ligament reconstruction and joint preservation. Particular achievements include being awarded the American Orthopaedic Society of Sports Medicine (AOSSM) 2019 O’Donoghue Sports Injury Award; the 2019 Jan Gillquist Award and the 2017 Albert Trillat Young Investigator award (both from the International Society of Arthroscopic Knee surgery and Orthopaedic Sports medicine -ISAKOS); all for the ISAKOS/OREF funded multicentre STABILITY study investigating the use of lateral extra-articular tenodesis in ACL reconstruction. Furthermore; Dr Getgood has recently been awarded CIHR and NIH grants (5.2 million CAD) for the follow up STABILITY 2 study; investigating different graft choices in ACL reconstruction. Further awards have included the Ontario Early Researcher Award in 2016 and a Canadian Foundation for Innovation JELF award which has provided support for laboratory research staff and infrastructure respectively. Dr. Getgood has authored over 120 peer-reviewed articles and numerous book chapters. He has given over 175 national and international conference presentations; lectures and demonstrations. He is a member of the AOSSM Board of Directors and sits on the knee preservation committee of ISAKOS. Dr. Getgood is a member of the Herodicus Society; the ACL study group; ESSKA and a founding member of the International Meniscus Reconstruction Forum (IMReF). He was the 2019 ICRS Annual congress clinical program chair; sits on the program committee for ESSKA 2020 biennial congress; will be ACL study group program chair in 2022; and will be deputy program chair and program chair for ISAKOS in 2023 and 2025 respectively.
