I started to work in the development of a cell therapy-based technique for cartilage repair in 2006. I promoted; together with other researchers; the built of a laboratory which achieved the GMP (Good Manufacturing Practices) certification in 2010 given by the Spanish Authorities. Currently I am the Technical Co-Director and the Head of Quality Control Department of the Cell Therapy Unit. My work has been centered in culturing chondrocytes for implantation and the improvement of these cells implanted in patients with chondral defects. In this sense; we have developed our own method based in 5-fold increase of the number of implanted cells. The proof of concept and the results of the 3 year follow-up in the first 50 patients have been presented several times in different ICRS meetings and they have been published in the Cartilage journal. Until now; more than 200 chondrocyte cultures have been carried-out to treat patients with cartilage defects in the knee; ankle and hip. Other fields include the research of the mechanisms involved in the chondrogenesis with the aim of finding other sources for cell therapy in cartilage repair.
