Radiation Physics
Dr. Emil Schueler received his PhD in Medical Physics from the University of Gothenburg, Sweden, in 2015. His work focused on studying and evaluating biomarkers for normal tissue toxicity after peptide receptor radionuclide therapy through functional imaging and gene expression response. Upon completion of his graduate work, Dr. Schueler was recruited to the PHASER group at Stanford University as a Postdoctoral Fellow in 2015. His research focused on establishing ultra-high dose rate (FLASH) beam lines, and he spearheaded the efforts of converting clinical linear accelerators for this purpose. He then led the early efforts of evaluating the radiobiological response of FLASH irradiation on normal tissue. In 2017, he joined the Medical Physics Residency Program at Stanford University. After completion, Dr. Schueler joined the research faculty at Stanford University where his research included the application of artificial intelligence in clinical quality assurance programs and in the utilization of novel nanoparticle designs for increased radiation sensitization. Dr. Schueler then joined the faculty at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in the fall of 2020. His research group is focused on developing novel treatment modalities and techniques to improve and expand the arsenal of cancer therapies. The main focus of his lab is in the physical and biological aspects of FLASH radiation therapy (RT). The current goals are centered on developing universal real-time dosimetry protocols for FLASH RT, to characterize the functional responses of FLASH irradiation on normal and tumor tissue, and to translate FLASH RT to the clinic.
