Graduated with Honors & Extraordinary Degree Award at the University of Barcelona (2000). Professor Romero Prize for the highest score on the national medical examination test. She completed residency and additional training in Pediatric Critical Care at the Vall d’Hebron University Hospital (Barcelona, Spain), becoming staff paediatric intensivist from 2008. Dr. Peña is member of the Clinical Research/Innovation in Pneumonia & Sepsis Group at Vall d’Hebron Institute of Research, the Health-Care Infection Control and Prevention Working Group in Catalonia (VINCat), and the Spanish Pediatric Critical Care Society Infectious Diseases Workgroup. Researcher and collaborator in Healthcare-associated Infections Surveillance Network in Spain (from 2007) & Europe (from 2013). She completed her PhD about respiratory infections in mechanically ventilated children and ventilator-associated events (VAE). She has coordinated the first prospective multicentre study assessing the impact on outcomes of three VAE definitions in children. Her current research focuses on the implementation of the pediatric VAE surveillance and its use in clinical practice as well as a quality marker. Other research interests include acute kidney injury, burn, and immunocompromised critically ill children. Some of her work has been awarded from the Spanish Pediatric Cardiology Society and the Argentine Society of Intensive Therapy.
