Prof. Johannes Huebner is the Head of the Division of Pediatric Infectious Diseases at the Dr. von Hauner Children’s Hospital, Ludwig Maximilians University Munich. After studying Medicine at the University of Freiburg (Germany), Dr. Huebner finished a residency at the Division of Infection Control and Hospital Epidemiology in Freiburg and after that joined Children`s Hospital in Freiburg to complete a residency in Pediatrics. Between 1996 and 2004 he spent 6 years at Harvard Medical School in Boston working as a Principal Investigator and Assistant Professor on vaccine development against multiresistant gram-positive bacteria at the Channing Laboratory (Brigham and Women`s Hospital). Prof. Huebner joined the Division of Infectious Diseases, Department of Medicine, at Freiburg University in 2004 as Attending Physician and accepted the position as Head of the Division of Pediatric Infectious Diseases at the Dr. von Hauner Children`s Hospital in 2012. Prof. Huebner`s major scientific interests are the identification and characterization of capsular polysaccharides of enterococci to elicit protective immune responses, and the analysis of bacterial virulence factors (such as biofilm formation). In addition, Prof. Huebner has pioneered the rational use of antibiotics in pediatrics (pediatric antimicrobial stewardship) in Germany. He is currently the President of the German Society of Pediatric Infectious Disease.
