Karen is an Immunology Nurse Specialist at the Royal Papworth Hospital which is one of the largest cardiothoracic hospitals in Europe. In May 2019 the hospital relocated to a brand new facility situated on the biomedical campus in the heart of Cambridge. Karen has been in post for 20 years within the Defence & Immunology Service which specialises in the diagnosis and treatment of difficult lung infections, including patients with non-CF bronchiectasis, Primary and Secondary Immunodeficiency disorders, and other lung conditions. She is reasonable for overseeing Immunoglobulin therapy infusions and the development of an established Immunoglobulin Home Therapy training programme for patients with primary and secondary Immunodeficiency’s. This service has recently gained Quality in Primary Immunodeficiency Services (QPID) accreditation. The Immunology nursing team also offer a range of support mechanisms to facilitate patient’s self-management of their condition through the provision of a very busy nurse led telephone support service and nurse led annual telephone review consultations. Karen’s role in the last few years has progressed and she line manages successful Home Intravenous Antibiotic Service to enable patients to learn how to self-administer antibiotic therapy at home. Karen’s interests include developing pathways of care for young people during their transition of care from adolescence to adult services. She is a member of the British Society for Immunology (BSI) writing group and has been an active member of INGID for 17 years.
