Having trained as an Old Age Psychiatrist and Epidemiologist, I developed early research interests in risk factors for late-life mental disorders and the physical-mental health interface, as well as supervising a range of International Mental Health projects. Over the last 10+ years, I have focused on the application of data science and clinical informatics in mental health research, leading the innovative Clinical Record Interactive Search (CRIS) platform at the South London and Maudsley Biomedical Research Centre since its inception in 2007. CRIS supports researcher access to de-identified mental health records data on over 500,000 patients from a 1.3m catchment in southeast London; it has become an internationally leading and influential data resource, enhanced by a unique range of data linkages and natural language processing algorithms, and has supported over 250 research publications to date. Through the KCL and South London and Maudsley Centre for Translational Informatics, we are increasingly facilitating the application of these research resources to underpin clinical decision support and wider mental health service developments.
