Attachment style and family structure in psychiatric patients and their relatives. - EPP0791

Abstract

Introduction

The structure and functioning of a family system and the attachment style of its members; through mutual interaction, have an important influence on the genesis and evolution of mental illness through the relationship between the couple, the affection and attention provided to the offspring, and the family's degree of cohesion and adaptability.

Objectives

The purpose of this work is to study the characteristics of family structure and attachment patterns in a group of psychiatric patients and their own relatives.

Methods

This is a descriptive, retrospective and observational study in which a battery of questionnaires was applied to 37 patients admitted to the Psychiatric Day Hospital of the Assistance Complex of Burgos. The same battery was applied to 41 relatives of the same patients, at least a relative for each patient. The questionnaires were FACES IV (Olson, 2011), which assesses family structure, and CAA-r (Melero & Cantero, 2017), which assesses attachment style in adults.

Results

The distribution of the types of family structure perceived by both groups was similar whereas significant differences between both groups in attachment styles detected (Sig<0.005). We found a significant correlation between patients and two insecure attachment scales (p<0.005) and between the relatives' group and the secure attachment scale (p<0.000).

Conclusions

The conformation of the family structure and the attachment strategy of its members could be an important factor in the genesis and development of mental illness. Intervention at these levels could improve the prognosis of these patients and would be especially important in areas such as the Day Hospital.
