MD Cappellini has been active in the fields of rare diseases in adults including Hemoglobinophaties and Lysosomal Disorders and Heme patway disorders for over 40 years. She has published a large number of peer-reviewed original articles in these areas, as well as being a regular contributor and invited speaker at national and international meetings. She focused on the phenotypic expression of thalassaemia major and intermedia and evaluated the genotype-phenotype relationship, taking into account the co-inheritance of modifier genes. Dr. Cappellini studies oxidative stress in pathologic erythrocytes, focusing on the role of non-transferrin-bound iron in relation to iron chelation. She is involved in clinical trials for new iron chelators and new molecules for rare diseases being PI for multicentres international studies. Dr Cappellini is a Member of a number of societies, including the American Society of Hematology (ASH), the European Hematology Association (EHA), the Italian Society of Hematology (SIE), the Italian Society of Internal Medicine (SIMI), the Bioiron and the European Society of Internal Medicine. She is member of the board of European Gaucher registry. Dr. Cappellini is Past President of the European Federation of Internal Medicine (EFIM). She is Honorary Fellow of RCP and ACP. She has been invited as a spearker for the last 3 Cooley’s Anemia Symposia and Member of the Scientific Committee for their Symposia. She has been the Chair of the ASH Scientific Committee on Iron and Heme in 2016/2017 She is member of fellowship grant committee at EHA She is awarded with the Stratton Medal by ASH 2020
