Prof Plat is professor Physiology of Nutrition within the department Nutrition and Movement Sciences at the Maastricht University, The Netherlands. Within the department Nutrition and Movement Sciences, we work on the theme of “metabolic health” which is at the core of health & disease and amongst others an important factor in the development of type II diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Prof Plat is known from his work on plant sterols and stanols in the management of dyslipidemia, which contributed to the current position of these compounds in most international guidelines. Additionally, Prof Plat works on other dietary intervention strategies such as fatty acids, beta-glucans, nuts, protein hydrolysates and other non-nutrients. He published >175 original research papers. Prof Plat was elected chair (2013-2016) of the Dutch Academy of Nutrition Sciences. He is current head of the department of Nutrition and Movement Sciences and in this position responsible for the Maastricht Metabolic Research Unit. Finally, he is leader of Division 1 “Obesity, Diabetes and Cardiovascular Heath” of the research school NUTRIM. He is a dedicated member of the EAS for >20 years, he was member of the EAS consensus panel writing the publication “The position of plant sterols and stanols in the management of dyslipidemia and prevention of cardiovascular disease”, he recently organized a Satellite symposium “Lifestyle, Metabolism and CVD risk” at the EAS meeting Maastricht 2019, and is currently guest-editor of a “Nutrition and Lifestyle review series” for Atherosclerosis.
