Abstract

Abstract Body

Patient and Public Involvement and Engagement (PPIE) in health care research enhances the quality, appropriateness, acceptability and relevance of the research to patients and the public. In areas where conducting research is regarded as challenging, such as Paediatric Intensive Care (PIC), it is even more important that the research is well-designed and understands the perspective of children and young people (CYP) and parents. Research Ethics Committees and funders expect to see evidence of PPIE, but there are few published accounts within the context of PIC to provide insight into different models of PPIE and help illuminate good practice. Contemporary case studies of PPIE within national multi-centre research studies help identify strategies researchers have taken to identifying participants such as engaging with charities or existing PPIE groups, as well as engagement with inpatients and families. Facilitators include: funding for facilities, refreshments, reimbursement of travel expenses /child care; flexibility in the timing of activities and variety of engagement methods to assist with access and promote inclusivity. Researchers’ highlight the positive impact and learning opportunities that comes from working with CYP and parents to shape research. CYP and parents’ value the opportunity to consider research during critical illness but the protocol needs to be well-designed with clear messages about risks and benefits. This is best achieved by working with families to address acceptability and optimise research design.

PPIE is integral for successful research funding, ethical approval and successful trial conduct. Researchers need to understand different models of engagement and facilitators to ‘good’ PPIE.
