Pathophysiolgogy
Professor A. G. Tzioufas, MD received his degree in Medicine from the School of Medicine of the University of Ioannina (1983), where he also completed his PhD (1989), the specialty of Rheumatology (1994) and Internal Medicine (2010), in Athens. He served for 12 months as a visiting scientist in National Institute of Health in the U.S.A (2006-7). In 2010 he was elected as a Professor of Rheumatology and Immunology in the Medical School of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. Professor A.G. Tzioufas has a long standing research on the pathogenetic mechanisms, clinical presentation and treatment of systemic autoimmune rheumatic disease. He studies the regulatory mechanisms of adaptive and innate immune responses. His research group has focused on the delineation of clinical phenotypes of systemic autoimmune rheumatic diseases and their associations with newly developed biomarkers. In his department more tan 15 clinical trials were performed, since 2011. Three of them were of Phase II He supervised more than 15 PhD students. He is a member of numerous scientific committees in Greece and abroad. He is a board member in 6 peer reviewed Scientific Journals and a reviewer in more than 30 scientific journals. Professor Tzioufas has more than 450 publications in international Peer Reviewed Journals and books (more than 130 in the last 5 years) and has given more than 100 lectures as an Invited Speaker in scientific conferences and universities in Europe, USA, Latin America and the Far East. He has more than 26000 citations and h-index 80 (Google Scholar).
