Cohen Tervaert studied Medicine at the University of Groningen where he obtained his MD in 1981. Cohen Tervaert specialized in Internal Medicine, Nephrology, Clinical Immunology and Rheumatology. In 1990, he obtained a PhD (cum laude). Subsequently, he worked at Harvard Medical School Boston, Groningen (as a fellow of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences), Maastricht (as the Chair of the Department of Immunology at the Maastricht University chairing), and Rotterdam (Research Director of the Sint Franciscus Vlietland Group). Currently, he is a Professor of Medicine and Director of the Division of Rheumatology, Department of Medicine, University of Alberta in Edmonton. Cohen Tervaert’s research focuses on various rheumatic disorders. In his translational research laboratory, mitochondrial and immune abnormalities are studied. His clinical interest is in inflammatory disorders such as vasculitis and foreign body induced rheumatic diseases such as ASIA. He is a founding member of the International Autoimmunity Consortium, the Dutch Vasculitis Scientific working group, and of the North American Vascular Biology Organization. He is a member of the European Commission expert panel on medical devices. He is (co) author of more than 480 scientific articles. His Hirsch factor per April 2022 is 98
