Luis’ connection to diabetes is centered around his experience of growing up with a stepfather and grandmother who were diagnosed with type 1 and type 2 diabetes. After immigrating to the US from Cuba, Luis completed his degree in Chemical-Biomedical Engineering at Florida State University while leading research projects in intelligent orthotics, computational fluid dynamics and microfluidic design, and infusion set failure detection in insulin pump systems. Prior to co-founding Diatech Diabetes, Luis held positions at GE Healthcare helping lead a ventilator fleet upgrade for a large health system estimated at $21M in savings, and Johnson & Johnson’s cardiac electrophysiology division where he participated in over 300 procedures. As the company’s CTO, Luis manages SmartFusion’s software development with specialized expertise in machine learning and data science (experienced in Python, Java, JavaScript, C/C++, HTML/CSS, NodeJS, Swift, MongoDB, and AWS cloud). He is also trained in computer-aided design programs (CAD, FDM, SLA 3D printing) and is a Six Sigma Green Belt-certified Engineer. Luis currently sits as a Co-PI for Diatech Diabetes’ National Institutes of Health Phase I SBIR Grant and is dedicated to seeing the successful development and commercialization of SmartFusion.
