Ilana Halperin Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, Toronto, ON, Canada Ilana Halperin is a full-time staff physician and Assistant Professor in the job description of Clinician in Quality and Innovation. Dr Halperin has a BSc from McGill University, Canada, and an MD from the University of Western Ontario, Canada; she completed internal medicine and endocrinology training at the University of Toronto, Canada, and received an MSc in Quality Improvement and Patient Safety at the Institute for Health Policy, Management and Evaluation, University of Toronto. She was an early adopter of digital tools and virtual care and was recently named as physician lead for the digital and virtual care taskforce at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, Canada, where she practices. Dr Halperin has a large Type 1 diabetes practice with a special interest in young adults and pregnant women and has been asked to speak numerous times on how to integrate technology into virtual diabetes visits.

Dr. Rocio Harbison is board certified in Endocrinology. She graduated from the University of Puerto Rico. She completed her Internal Medicine Residency at St Vincent’s Hospital in Indianapolis, Indiana and her Fellowship in Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Metabolism at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, Michigan. She was faculty at the University of Texas Health Science Center Houston and worked in a large group practice prior to founding Advanced Endocrinology and Diabetes Clinic in Houston, TX. She has been voted one of Houston’s Top Doctors by HTexas Magazine, one of Texas Monthly’s 2015 Rising Stars and voted Top Doctor by Houstonia Magazine. Dr. Harbison believes that the patient physician relationship is a partnership focused on the long-term health and well-being. Sara Hartnell is Lead Diabetes Specialist Dietitian & Insulin pump educator working within the Nutrition and Dietetics Department and the Institute of Metabolic Sciences Wolfson Diabetes and Endocrinology Clinic (IMS-WDEC) at Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. She manages a team of over 20 dietitians covering Adult Metabolics, Obesity, Diabetes, Endocrinology and Cardiology. Ali Hashemi is the Co-Founder of Glucare and an investor in early-stage ventures at the intersection of health and technology, with a particular focus on applying deep learning and complex algorithms to solve challenging problems in healthcare. Ali was previously the founder of Amana Healthcare, the benchmark and fastest-growing continuum-of-care hospital platform in the Middle East, acquired by Mubadala Healthcare in 2018 in what was among the most significant deals in regional healthcare M&A. Lutz Heinemann studied Process Engineering at the University of Applied Sciences, Düsseldorf, Germany, receiving his degree in 1976, and went on to study Biology at the University of Düsseldorf, qualifying as a Biologist in 1982. After three years as Assistant Professor in the Neurophysiology Department at Düsseldorf University, working with Professor J. Haase, Professor Heinemann transitioned to the field of Internal Medicine. He went on to work with Professor M. Berger at the Clinic for Nutrition and Metabolism in the Centre for Internal Medicine and Neurology from 1985 to 1999. In 1999, Professor Heinemann founded his own company, the Profil Institute for Metabolic Research in Neuss, Germany, where he remained as CEO until 2009. Professor Heinemann is a member of the German Diabetes Association (DDG) and the European Association for the Study of Diabetes (EASD). He also sits on the Scientific Advisory Boards of various pharmaceutical and diagnostics companies. Since 2011, he has been the Managing Editor of the Journal of Diabetes Science and Technology. Professor Heinemann’s scientific research is focused on insulin pharmacology and diabetes technology. Between 2010 and 2015, he acted as coordinator for the EU-funded project AP@home. In 2007 he received an award for “Leadership in Diabetes Technology” from the Diabetes Technology Society and, in 2012, was granted the “Artificial Pancreas Research Award” by the Diabetes Technology Society.
Bruce is uMotif’s entrepreneurial leader and co-founded the company in 2012. He and his team have designed and built the uMotif patient-centric data capture platform powering site-based to fully decentralised clinical, real-world, and post-marketing research. Bruce began his career working in clinical trials at British Biotech before joining the UK Civil Service Fast Stream in the Department for Culture, Media and Sport.
