Session Description
Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) contribute to nearly 70% of global deaths. The success of antiretroviral therapy and its broad access has increased life expectancy among people living with HIV (PLHIV). Among PLHIV in sub-Saharan Africa, 15% are aged 50 years and older, and by 2040 this proportion is predicted to reach 27%. Studies indicate that PLHIV are at higher risk of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) in comparison to the general population. Factors such as chronic immune activation and drug side effects may contribute to increased rates of NCDs. Over the past 15 years, the HIV response has helped build workforce capacity and enhance health infrastructure and information systems. Moving forward, is it possible to meet the emerging challenge of NCDs and deliver comprehensive health services to PLHIV? In this panel, we will discuss the considerations, challenges, and solutions to integrate NCD screening and management, and to integrate mental health services into HIV services.
