Session Description
Racial, ethnic, and sexual gender minority persons are disproportionally affected by HIV. This is no accident. These are the same disenfranchised individuals affected by structural racism, pervasive stigma, poor access to medical care and insurance, under-resourced educational systems, and co-morbidities that complicate HIV prevention and treatment. Any plan to End the HIV Epidemic (EHE) must reach individuals with full awareness of these factors to meet them where they are at, and meet their needs with cultural competence that builds partnerships in their communities. In 2019, NIAID CFARs and NIMH Centers were funded to kick-start projects to advance the EHE initiative to facilitate such partnerships using implementation science to enhance services and ensure delivery of best practices. Three projects will be presented: (1) Development and adaptation of an effective sexual health services delivery model to meet the needs of racial and ethnic minorities most impacted by HIV in Sacramento County; (2) The Five Point Initiative in Miami being implemented in five types of neighborhood venues (e.g., barbershops, laundromats) in five Miami Dade zip codes with the highest number of Black individuals living with HIV; and (3) Implementation of street-based PrEP/HIV care and social network outreach for transgender individuals with experiences of sex work, violence, or substance use in San Diego.
