Love, life and riots

Room
Art Exhibits Channel
Session Description
Photo exhibition. In theory, the prognosis for a person diagnosed with HIV, Hepatitis C or TB is now better than it ever has been. In reality, that depends on where you live and who you are. Access to medicines is not equitable. Millions of people die each year because essential drugs are overpriced. Scientific advancements are worthless if they are out of reach. When health budgets won't stretch to treat everyone in need, the most vulnerable are left behind. Treatment activists around the world are fighting patent barriers to make medicines affordable. We won’t stop until everyone can access the life-saving medicines they deserve. www.makemedicinesaffordable.org

Room
Art Exhibits Channel
Session Description
The 'When Dogs Heal' virtual photography exhibit tells the story of people across America living with HIV, and how their dogs have helped them thrive. This project gives a true voice to those living with HIV, puts power back into an illness that has been burdened with stigma for far too long, and shines a light on the incredible healing power of the dog/human bond. Turning a joyful lens onto the HIV community allows for a re-writing of the contemporary HIV experience, one that the creators hope inspires viewers. Dr Robert Garofalo (a national authority on LGBT and HIV health issues) and photographer Jesse Freidin (a national authority on dog photography) are proud to share these moving portraits and first-hand accounts. The 'When Dogs Heal' book will be published by Lerner Press in 2021. Find more information on the book at https://www.whendogsheal.org/

Faces of AIDS

Room
Art Exhibits Channel
Session Description
Faces of AIDS is Jim Wigler's exhibit of 101 people infected with the AIDS virus during the mid 1980's. To humanize the epidemic, he took a close up portrait of each person smiling, looking wonderful and looking awesomely human. The main impetus was to ameliorate the public's fear of getting too close to and helping neighbors who were suffering. The photographs traveled with the AIDS Memorial Quilt throughout the country. These important images help tell the story of AIDS and so that we always remember the many lives lost and impacted during the past four decades.
